Welcome!

Updated: Mar 11, 2021

Hey everyone! We want to briefly introduce ourselves and tell you what we're looking to accomplish with this organization.

Welcome to the CSUF Philosophy Alumni Association for Diverse Students! We are a collective of Philosophy Alumni looking to connect with other alum and current students in order to support each other in all endeavors. With this first post we want to outline a few things about this organization as well as introduce ourselves briefly, promote our upcoming April Zoom Meeting, and outline what you can find on this website.

April Zoom Meeting

First and foremost we want to promote our Upcoming April Zoom Meeting. It takes place April 9 at 7:00pm (PST). At this meeting we will be discussing most of what will be in this post so please head over the events page and RSVP for the event. There we can collect your email so that you can receive the relevant information for the meeting. Don't miss out!

The Board

Since this community is just starting out we have three beginning board members: Karen Parra (President), Mariana Gomez (Vice President) and River Nuñez (Secretary). You can view more extensive bios on our Mission Page, but we wanted to give a quick history. Karen and Mariana set up a Zoom Meeting with alumni, current students and some faculty in June 2020 to discus the ramifications and changes needed at our university during the BLM movement. That discussion lasted multiple hours and members of the group expressed interest in starting a monthly meeting to discus different philosophies and current events; thus this organization was created.

Our Goals

The goal of our community is to connect alumni from all graduation years in order to set up a network of support in as many industries as possible. Being recent grads ourselves, we understand how hard it is to start in the industry you plan to have a career in. Having a network of support from others who have similar questions or experiences can be extremely helpful. Head on over to our Members Page, fill in the form and you'll gain access to our Members and their contact information.

With this community we also hope to help current diverse student with mentoring and Resources. The University system is simply not built with the perspectives of diverse students in mind. While we were students we often found ourselves starved of resources and understandings that took into account our perspectives of the world we inhabit. Being bogged down with white, cis-gendered, male philosophies is suffocating, which is why we want to provide students with other philosophies we did not have access to that would have helped our academic careers. As a Member you'll be able to upload any philosophy resources you have in order to help anyone who visits our website expand their knowledge of the world we live in. Please use these resources respectfully, and feel free to ask us any questions you have about this on our Contact Page.

Blog

Our Blog posts will be about everything going on in the organization. Here we will promote Upcoming Events, organization updates and, in the near future, Alumni/Current Student Highlights. Every month we will shine a spotlight on an Alum or Student we think are doing amazing work in our community. We will select a piece of work, whether is be a paper, film, art, etc., and share it with our community for further discussion! If you are interested in being spotlighted, please contact us, and if we select you we will contact you immediately!

Thank You!

We are so excited for this opportunity to connect with you all and can't wait to see what our organization becomes.
